Our Origins

Long-Standing Partnerships Across Africa

Every origin relationship is direct and built on years of trust. We know the growers, the land, and the stewardship practices behind every harvest. All of our teas come from the Camellia sinensis tea plant, and we love geeking out on varietals, terroir, and flavor notes with our buyers.

Rwanda tea growing region
Signature Origin

Rwanda

  • Black Tea (all varieties and cuts)
  • Green Tea (all varieties)
  • Premium White Teas

Rwanda black teas are a direct alternative to Assam, delivering the same bold, malty body that Indian Assam is known for. Rwanda greens are distinctly different from Malawi greens, with their own unique flavor profile shaped by high altitude and volcanic soil.

All teas from the Camellia sinensis plant. Varietal and flavor note details available on request.

Conventional, Certified Organic, and Fair Trade available

Malawi tea growing region
East Africa

Malawi

  • White Tea (Thyolo White, Bvumbwe White)
  • Green Tea (steamed and roasted varieties)
  • Oolong (Thyolo Oolong, Livingstone's Twist & Dry, Malawi Green Oolong)
  • Black & Dark Tea (Thyolo Black, Bvumbwe Treasure, Breakfast Blend, Dark Post-Fermented)
  • Herbs (Lemon Verbena, Spearmint, Lemongrass, Hibiscus, Moringa)

Malawi offers an extraordinary range from a single origin. Greens are steamed or roasted with very different character from Rwanda greens. Oolongs are rare for Africa and exceptional. Custom grades and cultivar blends available.

Regenerative Organic certification underway. All Camellia sinensis teas plus select herbs and botanicals.

Why Whole Leaf

Real Tea, Not Extracts

Whole leaf tea varieties from African tea gardens

Tea extracts solve one problem: standardized caffeine or a single isolated compound. Whole leaf and CTC teas solve a bigger one: flavor depth, compound synergy, label transparency, and a story your customers actually connect with.

If every brand uses the same extract from the same supplier, every product tastes the same. Whole leaf gives your brand a flavor fingerprint no one else has.

Hand Plucked, Not Machine Cut

Our teas are mostly hand plucked by skilled workers who select only the finest leaves and buds. Machine harvesting cuts indiscriminately, mixing stems and mature leaves. Hand plucking delivers a cleaner, more consistent product and sustains livelihoods for thousands of farming families.

Label Transparency

"Brewed organic green tea" reads differently than "green tea extract" on a nutritional panel. Clean-label consumers notice, and increasingly, they choose the ingredient they recognize.

Flavor Complexity

Whole leaf teas contain hundreds of volatile aromatic compounds that create depth and nuance. Extracts are engineered for function, not taste. Real tea has terroir, and your formulator can work with it.

Compound Synergy

L-theanine, EGCG catechins, polyphenols, and antioxidants occur naturally together in whole leaf. Isolating a single compound removes it from the matrix that makes tea work as a whole.

Origin Story & Traceability

Every lot we ship traces to a specific garden and cooperative. You can name the country, the region, and the people who grew it. Extract suppliers typically blend from anonymous sources across multiple countries.

Brand Differentiation

When your competitors all buy the same standardized extract, their products converge. Whole leaf gives you a unique flavor profile, a real origin story, and a reason for customers to choose you over the next brand on the shelf.

Risk Management

We Manage the Risks So You Don't Have To

Tariffs are shifting. Climate is unpredictable. Having a partner with boots on the ground and eyes on the data makes the difference between reacting and being ready.

Trade and Tariff Navigation

With tariffs on Asian-origin teas rising and trade policy in flux, where you source matters more than ever. African-origin teas imported through 3 Mountains benefit from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides duty-free access to the U.S. market for qualifying goods from eligible African countries.

Lower landed costs compared to tariff-impacted Asian origins

We track HTS codes, duty rates, and policy changes so you stay ahead

Climate Monitoring and Supply Resilience

Climate volatility is already disrupting tea production in major Asian growing regions. Drought in Assam, unpredictable monsoons in Sri Lanka, and shifting seasons across South Asia are creating supply gaps and price spikes. We have people on the ground in East Africa watching conditions in real time, not reading about them after the fact.

Diversified origins across Rwanda, Malawi, and South Africa reduce single-source risk

Streamlined Communication Flow

Every Detail, Documented

Your procurement team needs more than a price list. We provide the documentation, testing, and traceability that commercial buyers require — backed by relationships built on mutual respect with every grower we work with.

If you've worked with overseas suppliers who go silent after the invoice, send incomplete documentation, or make you chase every update — we built this partnership model specifically to solve that.

US Headquartered, Native English Speakers

No language barriers, no timezone confusion. Your account is managed from the U.S. with agents and garden managers on the ground in each origin country.

COAs and Testing on Every Lot

Third-party lab results for every shipment. EGCG, antioxidant levels, heavy metals, pesticide residue. No surprises.

Certifications Ready to Go

USDA Organic, Fair Trade, Regenerative Organic, and more depending on origin. We handle the paperwork so you don't have to chase it.

Full Traceability

Know the garden, the region, and the cooperative behind every shipment. Not a blended, anonymous commodity.

Garden to Dock Logistics

We manage everything from garden to port, overseas freight, and delivery to your facility. One partner, one point of contact.

Responsive Communication

We answer emails. We return calls. We keep you updated proactively. If you've been burned by unresponsive suppliers, you'll notice the difference immediately.

Honoring the People and the Planet

Striving Toward More Equitable Global Trade Relations

Our relationships go far beyond buying and selling. We provide seed funding, business training, and mental health support to the cooperatives we work with, particularly women-led cooperatives in Rwanda.

At just one of our partner factories in Rwanda, 7,000 farmers and factory workers depend on the tea trade for their livelihoods. With large extended families, that single partnership supports roughly 100,000 people in the surrounding community.

When you partner with 3 Mountains, your supply chain actively supports entrepreneurship training, fair wages, and regenerative agricultural practices across East and Southern Africa.
